A Simple Way to Vote
Today, we use complex machines and paper ballots to vote in elections. We think of voting as a modern process. But thousands of years ago, people in Ancient Greece had a much simpler way to make decisions. They used beans.
White and Black
In the Greek city-states, citizens would gather to vote on laws or leaders. Each person was given two beans: one white and one black. The white bean usually meant 'yes,' and the black bean meant 'no.' This was a very fast and easy way to count votes.

The Voting Vase
People would place their bean into a vase. The vase was often hidden so that no one could see how a person voted. This kept the vote secret. At the end of the day, the officials would count the white beans and the black beans to see which side had more votes.
Why Beans?
Why did they use beans? Beans were common and easy to find. They were also small and easy to carry. It was a practical solution for a society that did not have paper or pens like we do today. It shows that even in ancient times, people cared about fairness and secrecy in their elections.
A Lasting Idea
Even though we do not use beans to vote anymore, the idea of using a simple object to represent a choice is still with us. It reminds us that democracy is not about the technology we use, but about the people who make the choices. The humble bean was once the most powerful tool in the city.
